New Project: Fire & Oak .com

Our new client, the South City Group needed a website for Fire & Oak, which is a restaurant with 2 locations, one in Jersey City and one in Montvale NJ. They needed an improvement on their previous website, which while nice, was a flash prebuilt template. The previous designer did a great job filling in this template but like most flash only sites it was mostly style and not substance. Also the website which has ton of inbound links had a very poor search engine presence. This was most likely due to the fact that the site was 100 percent flash. [Read More]

For java logging - we love LOG4j

Here at Web Inspired we right a lot of java. We are not big fans of php (it scares us from a security standpoint). We substitute jsf for php. We feel jsf is superior because the pages are backed by object oriented java code. We use log4 j to handle our logging. We like log4j because it is very easy to set up, it's customizable and it just works.  [Read More]

Glassfish: Context is already active

I am running glassfish Edition 3.1 (build 43) on linux. I was getting an odd, Context is already active error when i would try and run an application that i had running on my windows install of glassfish. The application was built with netbeans 7.0.1. It was running flawlessly on windows/glassfish. I tried everything to get the app to load on linux.. The only solution i found was to remove the beans.xml file...[Read More]

PROJECT OVERVIEW: NyNJLifeInsurance.com

We started with a design revolving around a 960 pixel wide page to ensure the site would look great on all screen resolutions. Working with our client we picked out a warm color scheme and some nice beach imagery. It was agreed that the look of the site should inspire feelings of family and conjure memories of the family summer vacation. We want our visitors to realize how important life insurance is to family. We used all the content that the client provided for the copy and created some awesome pie charts to show some of the interesting life insurance statistics that they had provided. We decided against flash because we wanted the site to perform on the apple mobile platforms (they still can't handle flash).[Read More]

Custom Atom Blog Reader

I wanted to tie my blog into my home page so that it would display the most recent blog post written as well as provide links to the last few posts that i have written. If i had written the homepage in JSF and not HTML this would be a breeze but as stated before, JSF was not available for the home page. To handle posting the blog info to my home page i would have to use either java-script or flash. I love flash, but its not supported well by the search engines, so i decided to go with a java-script solution.[Read More]

Goodbye Pebble, Hello Apache Roller

I had been using pebble to blog for a long time. Pebble is very easy to set up and xml based.I had my eye on Apache Roller for some time but was not comfortable with MYSQL on java and was a bit scared of connection pools. For the time being pebble was fine for me. I did not have the time to justify playing with new blog software. For the time being, pebble blogging was satisfying all my blog needs.[Read More]

Internet Explorer - providing headaches since 1996

I really hate Internet Explorer. It is mind boggling that a company as large as microsoft cant build a browser better than Firefox. I just wasted about 3 hours of my Sunday chasing IE bugs... Most of these problems where CSS problems on prior versions of IE (Internet Explorer), as of the writing of this article the current version of IE is 8. Todays rant is about how IE8 handles javascripting and ajax. Hopefully this post will help you avoid losing hours of youf life chasing IE ajax bugs like i did today. The last bug mentioned took me forever to figure out and left me dumbfounded. I could not believe that something so simple could cause IE to break.[Read More]

Rituals - They are not just for Dexter!

Just like an athlete stretches before practice, i usually stretch my brain out and ease into the programming. My coding ritual is to go over all the code written the day before and make sure it is properly commented and formatted. When i am in the zone i tend to forget about commenting my code and so i often have block after block of uncommented code. Its terrible, if I wait till the end f the project to insert the comments i usually do a terrible job. I have also found that by commenting the day after i find the methods that i am not using because i found a better way.[Read More]

Geek Squad, your freaking out! Fixing kbdclass woes.

I went south to see a few of my southern clients. I also wanted some R&R. While visiting with family i was asked to check out one of the family Dell desktops. It was blue screening on every shut down. It was brought to Best Buy's Geek Squad 3 times. Geek Squad said the mother board was on the way out and that it was time for a new machine. I am not a huge fan of dell but the pc in question was still in great shape and ran well except for the blue screen. On boot the machine also had an issue with a Floppy Diskette seek failure.[Read More]

Internet Explorer Emulator

As a web designer, you hate getting the call, the dreaded call from a client telling you that your design "looks weird" on his side. As a designer you think how can this be possible? Your web design utilizes css. You have tested your design against all the major search engines and on different machines and operating systems in your office. You have even sent it the design off to friends and family to bask in your design awesomeness, but your client is still seeing something "weird" on his end.[Read More]

IE8 Whitespace problems

The large black line across the top represents the background of the div that the flash document sits in. For those new to CSS, I refer to the space as a whitespace because that is how this bug or issue has always been referred to.. It only showed up in IE8 not in Firefox (shocking right). The white bar below the black is supposed to be there to give an overlap effect of the pen in the flash piece. This is the css code of the div that is getting the space. I changed the background to black so that the space would stand out more.[Read More]
